Mac Miller – "Good Evening" / "Don’t Mind If I Do"
Very much of up-and-coming hip hop today is composed of purely self-promoting flamboyant words over electro-pop samples and over-ambitious effects. This isn’t a bad thing by any means, only the natural progression of the art, but you don’t see much of the fundamentals of hip hop - gritty and honest lyrics over vernacular and equally-as-honest beats.
But hold on a min, thanks to the natural evolutionary tendencies of mankind, there still are some people out there, in some cases very young people, who do hip hop with a loyalty to its purest form. Mac Miller is one of these people.
In listening to Miller‘s first few mixtapes, you’d almost expect it to be loaded with warped sounds and artificial enhancement, but his music glorifies the simplicity of it all, delivering gritty and honest lyrics over vernacular and equally-as-gritty beats. His production is in large-part thanks to Mac’s cronie Big Jerm, sampling sounds of the fore-mentioned era while incorporating a Pittsburgh vibe with increasing expertise.
Check out these latest two releases from Miller, both of which have been released via his facebook page over the last couple weeks, and in anticipation of his soon-to-be-released mixtape, K.I.D.S. Sure these two in particular feature some more progressive samples, but shit, the kid’s gotta mix it up right? Mac’s releases thus far have only gotten better each time, so this latest release coming up this Friday should be an honest treat…enjoy!
